The RECAST Framework: Recalibrate Your Experience, Don't Restart Your Career

The gap this framework fills

Adult transition and career construction theory each rest on an assumption that AI displacement breaks: that the transition was chosen, that accumulated career capital keeps compounding, and that the psychological work happens in sequence and can be finished. No existing model was built for a population whose expertise is at once their greatest asset and the specific thing the market has stopped reading.

Stage 1, Recognize

Recognize converts unfocused worry into a task-level account of where you are actually exposed. Job titles predict almost nothing about which tasks a machine can already do, so the read happens at the task level, with a stated basis for each judgment. You are done when you can name three automatable tasks and three durable ones without notes.

Stage 2, Excavate

Excavate partitions accumulated experience into three classes: transferable, depreciating, and latent. Mid-career professionals are not short of assets, they are short of a partition. Without one they either defend everything, which reads as dated, or abandon everything, which reads as junior. The latent class, judgment work that never appeared in a job description, is the clearest edge over a younger candidate.

Stage 3, Compose

Compose rebuilds the professional account so continuity runs through judgment rather than job titles, with the displacement written in as a chapter rather than edited out as a gap. RECAST keeps the psychology of Bridges' transition model and breaks its order: identity work and market work run concurrently, because market response is one of the strongest inputs to identity repair.

Stage 4, Address

Address puts experience into the language read by screening software and by the human behind it, with nothing invented and nothing discarded. Twenty years of judgment does not lose value, it loses vocabulary. The stage is complete when the record parses cleanly, keywords cover three named target roles, six of every ten lines carry a magnitude, and no age-tell constructions remain.

Stage 5, Situate

Situate places retained capital against funded demand and states one defensible claim to one named decision-maker. A hiring manager considering an experienced candidate is not buying capacity, they are buying the removal of a category of expensive mistakes. High-volume applying loses because volume competes on recency and price, the two dimensions where this cohort is weakest.

The recalibration cadence

The five stages sit on a cadence that returns you to Recognize each quarter from a higher position. Transitions fail in week three, not week one, and the quieter failure is rebuilding the same single point of exposure in the new role within two years. RECAST treats recalibration cadence as a trainable career competency rather than a personality trait.

Three measured constructs

Experience Capital Recalibration, 0 to 100, measures the re-partitioning and re-expression of accumulated capital. Technological Identity Displacement, 0 to 10, measures the identity disruption specific to substitution rather than to personal failure. Legibility Debt, expressed in years, measures the gap between what experience is worth and what current hiring systems can read, and it accrues fastest in the longest-tenured, best-performing employees.

One boundary, stated plainly

Recalibration is translation, not invention. A reframed claim only counts if it holds up under direct questioning in an interview. Anything that cannot survive that is fabrication, and it fails at the worst possible moment. This line is written into the framework rather than added as a disclaimer.

Reflexive Competence Failure (RCF)

A stage 5 construct original to RECAST. Reflexive Competence Failure is the moment when deep domain competence becomes the obstacle to transition, when a professional keeps applying proven solutions to a problem that requires a different frame entirely. It explains why the strongest performers often stall longest: the expertise that produced two decades of results is the same reflex that blocks reframing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RECAST framework?

RECAST stands for Recalibration of Experience Capital After Systemic Technology-displacement. It is a five-stage career framework for professionals roughly 40 to 60 whose work is being repriced by artificial intelligence: Recognize your exposure, Excavate your experience capital, Compose your professional identity, Address the market's language, and Situate yourself against funded demand, on a quarterly recalibration cadence.

How is RECAST different from existing career transition models?

Established models assume the transition is voluntary, that career capital keeps compounding, or that the psychological work happens in sequence. AI displacement of experienced professionals breaks all three at once. RECAST runs identity and market work concurrently, treats accumulated capital as repriced rather than spent, and measures experience capital recalibration, technological identity displacement, and legibility debt.

What is legibility debt?

Legibility debt is the gap between what your experience is actually worth and what can be read inside today's hiring systems. It builds silently while you are employed and stable and comes due at re-entry. It is not skills obsolescence: capability is held constant and readability is what declined. Confusing the two sends a fully capable professional into unnecessary retraining.

Is RECAST a clinical assessment?

No. The identity index is a career instrument used to sequence career work, not a diagnostic tool. At high or acute scores the report says so directly and points toward a licensed professional alongside the career work.

How are RECAST scores calculated?

All three scores are computed on the server after the assessment is completed, never in the browser. That keeps the instrument consistent across consumer, institutional and corporate versions, and it means a repeat administration is comparable to the first.
